I'll be at this lovely WinterArts holiday show in Memphis starting the Friday after Thanksgiving. They even used my purse on the posters and everything! Woot!

I hope everyone is having a very enjoyable holiday season! If you are interested in a unique gift for someone in the Nashville area, please ask me about a workshop gift certificate.

Demo/sale Friday night reception Nov 20

Hi all! Just wanted to invite folks to come out and see the NEW Harpeth Art Center in Pegram. Mud Puddle Pottery has moved and expanded into the old Harpeth Clock and Quilt Building, and I plan to teach felting and other fiber arts there starting in 2010! At the reception this Friday night I'll be there demonstrating, and my work will be for sale there at least through Dec 20! Come out and see me! (P.S. If you are south or east, my stuff can also be found in the Boro at my friend's adorable boutique, Sugaree's, on the downtown Square.)/Harpeth%20Art%20Center%20Card%20front-email%20copy.pdf

Busy, busy, busy

Wow! This fall has been crazy busy. I even turned down several opportunities to participate in shows and fairs. Whew! I haven't updated everyone for over 2 months!!

Currently, my stuff is almost all at the Sarratt Holiday Art Festival - at the Sarratt Student Center on Vanderbilt Campus. Check out www.vanderbilt.edu/sarrattart for how to find it, etc. The Festival runs 10-6 daily through Sunday, December 9.

However, I have one piece of work that is getting ready to go on the auction block to benefit Music4TNKids. It is a guitar "top", covered in felt on both sides. One side has a pair of blue felt boots (kindof a western take on blue suede shoes), and it is autographed by my favorite local musical mamas, the Mamasitas! (Lee's son played on my soccer team at the Y back when I was coaching my son's team, and we're both from Oregon!!) Check out www.madison-art-center.com for more on the auction. There's an online auction, and a live auction on December 13 (tickets are $10 in advance, and $15 at the door) - there's some really cool work with some really awesome autographs!!

I also have a few pieces at the Art Center in Madison and at the Scarritt-Bennett gift shop.

I taught a really fun scarf workshop at the beginning of November - 2 whole days of scarves and (gasp!) samples!! I also did the Fall TACA fair, spent a glorious week in Hilton Head over Thanksgiving, and am now frantically trying to prepare for the holidays. (Although the felt christmas stockings may have to wait until next Christmas!)

Hope you are all enjoying the holiday season, and that all your holiday gift projects are finished and wrapped!

Hands Across the Cumberland

Welcome back! Well, while I was finishing up the wonderful and amazing TACA Fall Fair at Centennial Park, the rest of my compadres at the Madison Art Center were hanging the all-member show at the gallery. Hope to see all of you at the opening on October 13th!

TACA update

Hey Everyone!
One more day of TACA, and it's been tons of fun so far. Tomorrow promises to be more of the same! I've meet lots of nice artists, had "booth shots" taken of my booth (example here) and generally had a wonderful time. Most common comment: "I love the colors!" Most common question: "What is it made of?" Lots of people expressing interest in the workshop, so if you're planning to sign up, don't wait until it's full! (Scroll down a few more posts to find the one with the workshop info.)

Hope to see you tomorrow!

Fall TACA, here I come!

I found out today that I made it into the Fall TACA fair, my first time entering! Yaay! I'm planning to have lots of scarves and hats, in addition to my bowls, wall hangings, and handbags, and there may be a few surprises thrown it with new things I've been playing with. I got lots of inspiration when I was out in Oregon visiting my family in July!

Fall TACA is September 28, 29, and 30 in Centennial Park in Nashville, TN! For more information, TACA's website is www.tennesseecrafts.org.

Hope to see you there!

Excuse to visit Jack Daniels Distillery!

I am pleased to announce that a number of my works are at B. Fanning Co. in Lynchburg, TN. This is a new gift shop and gallery space just off the historic town square near the Jack Daniels Distillery. So you can head down there, take the free distillery tour, and the folks that arent interested in antiques and art can shop for whiskey souvenirs!

Thanks for coming to my show!

Thanks to everyone that came to the gallery to see my work - the Madison Art Center and I are very appreciative! I was very pleased with how everything went for my first gallery experience. Many MANY thanks to Kim and Paul for providing beautiful music during the reception, and to Rex and Marg for being such great partners in art. I learned so much from the whole experience, and look forward to my next opportunity. I just wish I had taken some pictures at the reception! (Duh!)

One more pic

This one shows my "dynamic" element of the show. It might be hard to see in the photo, but there are 6 of my bowls on a mobile in the nearest gallery. (There's a small column with a mirror on top of it just below the mobile.) It turns beautifully when the air comes on in the gallery!

Pix of my show at the gallery!

OK, I got to go by the gallery again today, to take some photos of the show. I like it a lot better than I did when I left on Sunday. I'm having trouble getting blogger to take more than one picture in a post, so I'll post the other pictures separately.

Come, come, come to the opening, or just come to the gallery. The show got listed in the News Herald this week, a free paper for Donelson/Hermitage/Old Hickory! Wahoo!

Getting ready for my new exhibit!

Nashville artists Laura McWhorter, Rex Boggs, and Margaret Frey open the month long exhibit – Static Dynamic - at the Tennessee Arts Center at Madison on May 29. The exhibit features a variety of two dimensional and three dimensional pieces, in multi-mediums ranging from fiber to pen-and-ink to photography.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be at 6:30 pm on Saturday, June 9 in the lobby of the Arts Center at 403 Gallatin Road, South, Madison. The free reception, with refreshments provided by Provence Breads and Café, will be a chance for the public to meet the artists. Live entertainment will be provided by Paul and Kim Caudell (www.myspace.com/paulandkimcaudell).
Boggs and Frey are returning to the Arts Center at Madison for the 2007 season after exhibiting in 2006. McWhorter, who recently participated in the Tennessee Association of Craft Artist show in Centennial Park, is presenting her first show at the north Nashville venue. All are members of the Tennessee Artist Guild.
McWhorter takes her background in the traditional textile arts of knitting, weaving, spinning, and felting in a new direction by combining these techniques, along with embroidery, beading and stitching to craft one-of-a-kind bags, wearables, and artwork. Merino wool is the primary material, with the frequent addition of silk fibers and beads of glass and natural materials. Other types of wool, as well as llama, alpaca, mohair, angora, are often incorporated into the work.
“The techniques of felt-making, spinning, and weaving have been used for thousands of years to clothe, shelter, and adorn. My work provides a palpable connection to the artisans of the past, while creatively exploring new ways to combine techniques that speak to modern aesthetics” McWhorter said of her work.
In commenting on this series, Frey says of her work. “Art communicates. At its very core, it brings an idea from one person’s head and hands to another’s eyes. Whenever I am inspired to draw, there’s an issue I want to examine, or a story I want to tell, or a moment I want to share. This ‘comic’ series explores the notion that art tells a story in a literal way,” Her exhibit will include many examples of her unique pen-and-ink illustration style.
“Photography has been a lifelong passion. Since I picked up my first camera, I was intrigued by the capacity of film to capture moments of time and place, and to focus the viewer’s eye on those aspects that the photographer chose to enhance,” Boggs says of his primary artistic tool.
“No other medium so delicately balances its function as both an exact and unflinching mirror of reality and an artistic expression of the photographers themselves. As a photographer explores the world, their work becomes both historical record and personal journal,” the award winning photographer continued.
Boggs has exhibited at numerous venues in Nashville including Untitled, the Plowhaus Artist Cooperative, with the Society of Nashville Art Photographers, in Centennial Park and with Nashville Photography Club, where he serves on the board of directors. He is also vice-chairman of the Tennessee Artist Guild.
The Tennessee Arts Center at Madison (www.madison-art-center.com) is a cooperative of artists at all levels. The Center just completed an exterior renovation as part of a plan to restore the gallery in the former Madison Theater to its original grandeur of the 1940’s and 50’s. The non-profit Center recently celebrated its fifth anniversary.
Taking a street level approach the Tennessee Artist Guild that operates the center at Madison promotes the efforts of all artists – new and well seasoned – by providing studio and exhibit space along with expertise. The Center serves as a anchor for the renovation of Main Street Madison.
Static Dynamic opens on May 29 and runs until June 24. The artist reception is free at 6:30 pm on Saturday, June 9, featuring live music and food.
For more information about the exhibit or other programs at the Tennessee Arts Center at Madison contact Tennessee Artist Guild executive director Vickie Frazier at (615) 868-8000. The galleries hours are 10:30 am till 2 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 10:30 am. Till 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The gallery is free and open to the public.

Welcome to my Nashville Fiber Blog!

Hi All,

I'm very excited - and exhausted! I survived my first TACA Tennessee Craft Fair, and I had a great time, and got great responses to my work. Thanks to all that stopped by to see me! I also got to be on Talk of the Town on Channel 5 on Friday morning, and on News Channel 5 + "Plus Side of Nashville" program on Comcast channel 50 the weekend before the fair. And a picture of one of my handbags was on the cover of the Weekend edition in the Tennessean, and my name was mentioned in the article about the fair. All in all, I'm thrilled with the whole thing! (Plus, I got a great deal on a used tent for future fairs - woo hoo!)

Here's a picture of my booth (when it wasn't raining!)
